Betsey Walker
Posted on Thursday, April 11th, 2013

Betsy Walker brings thirty years of writing experience to the cc|ED table, including five years at The New Yorker magazine and fifteen as Director of Communications at St. Michael’s Country Day School in Newport, RI. In between she was busy having children and working as a freelance writer and editor. And radio host.

At St. Michael’s, she was a one-person shop. Her work touched on every aspect of creating and nurturing the school’s persona, from daily web postings and press releases to bimonthly newsletters, alumni magazine, and three separate viewbooks. Betsy brought a great deal of finesse to her job, working with the Director of Admission to create marketing material and with the Director of Development to fine tune the effectiveness of the appeal.

She feels the best websites, viewbooks or fundraising initiatives tell a story: about the school and why the students thrive or about how the school’s mission of creating better artists–or scientists or athletes–could be better served by a donation.

It’s also about telling the story right and how that can show prospective parents or donors how they can get involved and become part of that story to produce motivated learners, competent athletes, and good young adults.

Betsy and her husband have certainly done their own homework. They toured some 20 secondary schools before deciding on the right ones for their own children.
